Today over 5M points, 50K points per day for the first time (and rising), and into the top 250 all time list - all good.

2M not too bad. Average of 43K daily 1PC offline suspect the 250W PSU couldn't take running the PC with a 8800GT 24/7, plan to get that fixed & add one more PC within the next 3 months.
ID: 15614 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
Just reached 7M, and got over 80K RAC for the first time. This is of course largely to do with the recent application improvements (well, improvements for me anyway).

That was only my small crunchbox that failed. I'm canibalizing the end of this month & moving it into an HTPC with a Geforce 9400 mobo. I hope that BOINC/GPUGRID.net supports multi/mixed GPU's, because I hope to use the 8800GT & onboard 9400 on this. Going to run Windows7 Home Premium 64 for the 30 days trial, until I can buy a license, because I tried running a mix of GTX260 & 8800GT on Mint Linux 64, & it couldn't detect the 8800GT.

8M Congratulations. I'm just a bit ahead of you at the moment (8.7M), but I don't think I will be for long at the rate your going. My GPU's have a couple of projects to run. Cheers ____________ BOINC blog

Mark, good to see you at 9M so early :)
ID: 16176 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
Thanks Mark. Yes you are probably right there, although I try to use the machines with the lesser GPU's (GTS250) to run Seti and Einstein I only run their CPU app. To me sETi is down there with counting Pi or trying to find another prime number - just slightly better than trying to create a quantum singularity. Although I am not sure I would want to pay the electric bill to do so, I would run Aqua and even the Milkyway before I ran sETi, Collatz or PrimeGrid. Not sure Aqua still use GPUs. I run the Lattice project, but it is extremely rare that I get a task. Well each to their own. After all it is the "mother" of all the BOINC projects. Or should that be the guinea pig :-) At our present rates I will get to 9M about 2days after you. I'm actually aiming to reach 10M by 23rd Apr. I'd better get my cards cooking then. My problem is I can't run them during the day due to heat, so they only tend to run overnight. Should give you plenty of opportunity to get ahead. ____________ BOINC blog

My main crucher pc has passed 200M lately. I have changed my hosts' operating system from WinXP to WinXP x64 (mostly because Rosetta needs a lot of ram). I have to admit that this is the fastest MS os (if it has enough ram)

And my vacations will be in 12 days, and no way I can let the 3 rigs working alone for 30 days.... All in all, I feel like going back to S@H for a bit guys. I really enjoy my time here, and really hope the work we all done together bring some good cures at light. Hope the best to you all, brave hearth people of altruist crunch! Firehawk

ID: 34632 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
Ooops...it seems that I got my Phenilalanine badge and didn´t notice.....cool! Congratulations! Well seems like my old friends at my home project SETI@HOME won´t ever stop teasing me to go back. I think that there is extra terrestrial life exists, in many forms. I've begun my crunching with SETI@Home (classic, before the BOINC times). I don't follow the SETI@Home project lately (I receive an invitation e-mail from them once in a while), but the history of the human telecommunication (and the lack of ET discovery by listening to radio signals for 40 years) convinced me that we won't find ET that way. As our technology evolves, we use less and less energy for our communication, emitting much less radio signals into the outer space, so even our civilization won't be detectable by listening to radio signals. There is only a ~100 years time frame in which we've emitted such powerful signals. 100 years is nothing compared to the age of the universe (~13.2 billion years). It is very unlikely, that we'll catch those powerful radio waves of ET, which were emitted by their civilization in their 100 years timeframe of technology a couple of million years ago. Besides, in a couple of years we'll use some quantum effect for our communication, which will use even less energy than electro-magnetic waves, also it will be undetectable for others (according to my current knowledge). Plus, Stoneageman have now a new 4x780ti monster, wich end my almost 2year domination with my 3x690 "cheap" amd rig. Once upon a time, one of my hosts was the 1st. Now it's the 3rd regarding the total credits, and 28th regarding the RAC. I'm glad that there is a great competition here, it's good for the project, and that's why we are here. And I hit my never expected 2bn creds in here. I can understand that. How about the three other badges? And my vacations will be in 12 days, and no way I can let the 3 rigs working alone for 30 days.... It can add an extra thrill to the vacation. :) One of the vapor chambers of my GTX690 has failed while I was 400km away. I've managed it through remote access... All in all, I feel like going back to S@H for a bit guys. You have three top-end hosts here. You can assign each one for a different project, so you don't have to leave this one for any other project you are interested in. I really enjoy my time here, and really hope the work we all done together bring some good cures at light. Did you know that the number of combinations in which the amino acids could be joined exceeds (by a couple of order of magnitudes) the number of the protons in the whole universe? Every living thing has a small "universe" (regarding its complexity) in every protein of their body. So, this is quite a big work to understand how it works, and why are there so few "useful" combinations. Hope the best to you all, brave hearth people of altruist crunch! Thanks, and I wish you the same!

Thank you guys, for all your words. You are doing a brilliant work over here. And Retvari, you make me think. Maybe I will reconsider that after the needed vacations :D

I know some SETI fans might not like it but thought I'd share the story.
ID: 34635 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
Wow, wasting 3 690s and the electricity it takes to run them to look for a signal that exists but will never be found when they are badly needed for real problems is irresponsible. Someone should pass a law to make that kind of waste illegal and shut that stupid project down.
ID: 34667 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
I know some SETI fans might not like it but thought I'd share the story. I heard that story somewhere else before :) Drake's equation is a hopeless attempt to figure out an unknown value by multiplying an estimated number with six unknown ratios. If it wasn't called equation, but estimation or guessing it would be OK. I understand that it is a scientific way to solve the whole problem by splitting it to smaller problems, but the only function of this equation is to name the obvious parts of the whole problem. It could be done by anyone who has some common sense, but there's too much variability (and debate) in the values of the seven factors in the equation.
ID: 34674 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
Well, lets not get so judgmental here Dagorath :) Even though I also don't believe they will find anything and the time would be better spent elsewhere. But to each his own. There is worse stuff being done than looking for aliens. Plus I understand that it must be nearly impossible to run GPUGrid while on holidays with all the problems that occur. As he said, I hope he comes back once holidays are over :D

I hope they don't discover ET until were ready, even Carl Sagan realized he made a mistake having those gold plated records attached to the Voyager probes. Who was it that said "When in the jungle, it's best not to cry out"? It's definitely a jungle out there, a wilderness if you will, there's bound to be predators.
ID: 34684 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
Wow, wasting 3 690s and the electricity it takes to run them to look for a signal that exists but will never be found when they are badly needed for real problems is irresponsible. Someone should pass a law to make that kind of waste illegal and shut that stupid project down. Not 3. 6x690. Plus 2x770 and one 780. All in 3 rigs. And take in that equation that I do live in a country that hardware cost 2x what it cost in USA. Can you say U$ 2k for a 690? Well, you need to be nuts. I am, thank god. Rippig off some heads and having fun elsewhere now, but im on the long run. And you should blame Stoneageman. I don´t like to be on second. Wait for the 790´s... be warned Stone ;) Oh yes, there is a guy on the stupid project that found a way to run 4x690´s in a single rig, but it´s summer in here and GPUGRID run all 5/10°C hotter than SETI. Unnatended 80°C rigs? Nope. Yes, SETI may be wrong. But i´m there since 1999 and I would never build such a farm without it. And I learn a lot about hardware there. They know things in that such big community. My rigs aren´t that big without a reason. And when I point the guns back to GPUGRID, you can bet that a lot of science will be done again.

$2K US is nuts! Next time you want a new card let me know. I'll buy it for you here in Canada and ship it to you. I could put it in a different package or disassemble it and ship it in pieces to fool the customs guards. But I won't do that for Stoneageman because he was naughty and took your top spot. I will do that only for you ;-)

Maybe because I'm too tired after working 12 hours today, and driving 130km, this quotation came to my mind: "Life is a short warm moment, death is a long cold rest" - from Free Four - Pink Floyd (nice fractal images, besides the waving) Or, this is the way my subconscious want to say: "please, don't rest!" ?

With-in 24hr a significant milestone is in order: Congratulations Zoltan Retvari on becoming the second GPUGRID cruncher to obtain a Tyrosine badge (5B). Thank you guys! It could have been done by yesterday, but I have some technical difficulties while taking back the overclocking of my CPUs and GPUs for the summer. Seems that one of my i7-4770k's gone crazy while I was reducing its clocks to the factory default. Now I'll begin to sell my older cards, so my contribution will be reduced at least for this summer, but I will get some GTX980Ti's for the winter.

Congratulations to all crunchers! After many slips and falls, I have succeeded in getting my two GTX 660 Ti devices working. Together with the two older GTX 650 Ti Devices these have pushed my RAC over 260,000. I hope to do much more, although with the air conditioning season just around the corner, things may be a little slower than I'd like thru' August.

Congrats Zoltan. Thank you, master cruncher! :) Now you just have to do it all over again for the last badge I'm prepared to. The first 5 billion took me 5 years, the second 5 billion will take much less time, or electricity. Out of curiosity I've gathered my recorded milestones below: Start: June 2010. (GTX 480) 300 million: 17 Sep 2011. 248 days to pass over Stoneageman :DD 400 million: 27 Nov 2011. 500 million: 26 Jan 2012. 600 million: 22 Mar 2012. (the release of GTX 680) 700 million: 13 May 2012. 1 billion: 13 Sep 2012. (28 months since my start) 1.5 billion: 8 Feb 2013. 2 billion: 28 Jun 2013. (9 months since 1 billion) 3 billion: 9 Apr 2014. (9 months since 2 billion) 4 billion: 15 Nov 2014. (7 months since 3 billion) 5 billion: 1 Jun 2015. (7 months since 4 billion) Is there a way to get the numeric data on this chart from boincstats?

Just wondering, since computational power increases exponentially, I'm guessing the RAC for this project scales with the FLOPS at the time. I assume because crunching back in 2010 would yield nearly no credit as compared to today if that were the case.

Just wondering, since computational power increases exponentially, I'm guessing the RAC for this project scales with the FLOPS at the time. I assume because crunching back in 2010 would yield nearly no credit as compared to today if that were the case. See my retrospective post about it. My last billion took 115 days, while my first billion took 28 months.
ID: 46770 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
Zoltan, what was your RAC back in the day, say 2012. How many GPUs did you have at the time and would you say they were high end? From your post it sounds like they are not scaling the RAC and rather it is purely FLOPS based.
ID: 46771 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
Three cheers for you, Zoltan :) As he said to me in a PM, "My monthly electricity bill is roughly €240 (it's flat rate, so I have to pay the margin yearly, or I receive some refund). My monthly energy consumption is 1960kWh." I'm not sure if he worked out a deal with his electricity company or what, because that figure seems awfully low for that amount of power consumed.
ID: 46777 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
Zoltan, what was your RAC back in the day, say 2012.In 2012 my RAC started at 1.6M, and its maximum was 3.5M. From May 2010 (GTX 480) to December 2010 I've earned ~40M credits, now it takes 4 days :). How many GPUs did you have at the time and would you say they were high end?I had two GTX 590s, one GTX 580 and 3 maybe 4 GTX 480s, then I've sold them and I've bought two GTX 670s and two GTX 680s (later a 3rd one and a GTX 690). I've always had high-end GPUs. From your post it sounds like they are not scaling the RAC and rather it is purely FLOPS based. The RAC depends on many factors: 1. the CUDA version used by the client (it had a big jump (+40%) when the CUDA4.2 client has been released) 2. the credit/sec ratio is different for different batches 3. the number of GPUs 4. the computing speed of the GPUs 5. the availability / reliability of workunits 6. the availability / reliability of the hosts

Next cruncher to reach 10 billion will either be (9,442,156,169 credits) Retvari Zoltan or RaymondFO* (8,547,370,489 credits).I've reduced my heat output for the summer by taking my GTX 980 Ti's offline. Gratulálok - I hope that is congratulations in Hungarian. That's right. :) Luckily this is a one word phrase (without any synonyms), so the machine translation won't mess it up. But (believe me) don't try to machine translate complex sentences to Hungarian, as it will be: (perhaps it's true for many languages) a, funny b, gibberish c, ambiguous d, unintelligible We (Hungarians - perhaps other nationalities also) exploit this as a spam filter, as machine translated spam messages usually fit to at least one of the above. The funniest results of such machine translations come from the far east, usually in the form of a user's manual. Köszönöm szépen! "Thank you (very) much!" Google translate will do this right only because this is another unmistakable phrase. But Köszönöm = Thanks szépen = beautifully If I say "Nagyon köszönöm" it means the same thing, Nagyon = very (much) in this case the order of the two words are reversed, because this is a simple attributed expression with the same meaning, but more formal than "Köszönöm szépen" (which is more informal) The subjective is usually hidden in the Hungarian language, unless it should be emphasized, or to make it unambiguous (so in the formal language it's usually not hidden). The combination of the above is also valid (and have the same meaning): Nagyon szépen köszönöm! (which is formal and informal also)

RaymondFO is next in line for Tryptophan - will be the fastest Cruncher (~5 years) to reach 10 billion GPUGRID credits. Congratulations RaymondFO for passing over 10 billion credits! It's obvious that it takes less and less time to aggregate a given amount of credits because the speed of computing is still growing according to Moore's law. However, the present transistor technology (MOS-FET) has nearly reached its (atomic) size limits, there are other possibilities to continue miniaturization. Also there's quantum computing, which will turn the whole IT industry (and everything based on IT - so our everyday life) upside down. That's why I think it would be nice to have BOINC statistics with interest rate (according to Moore's law) applied to the credits (=the sooner you begin crunching the harder to take your position for later contributors).

What do you think? So may I suggest to create some more badges which do not necessarily represent basic amino acids, but probably heavier proteins, such as Dystrophine, Hemoglobin or Myoglobin, as a reward for reaching those milestones? ____________ I would love to see HCF1 protein folding and interaction simulations to help my little boy... someday.

A significant milestone for me overnight -- 100 valid GPUGRID tasks in a row. Prior to this, I had a fair amount of problems. However, with a little advice from you all (http://www.gpugrid.net/forum_thread.php?id=4699) things have really turned around.

You're welcome! ;) Our pace is hindered by the lack of work lately. So I might find little green men by chance instead of the cure for all the diseases.

Hit 1m credits today! I joined way back in 2012 with my eBay server. Life moved on and sadly I stopped donating power. Now I'm back and miss this ecosystem. I find myself looking for some conversation. Would like to learn more about whats going on behind the scenes, where the work is going to etc. Happy to help though. Anyone communicating on Discord?

1M Congrats! I'm quickly on my way to 10M now, feels good. I took a small break while servers were down and tried Folding@home. Wish I could control GPU usage by % instead of temperature using TThrottle but at least there is some control there. To your next 1M! 🥂

September 24th 2020. It's for me a nice anniversary: I joined GPUGrid such a day as today on 2010. Congratulations GPUGRID veteran on 10 years. Tomorrow is my 7 year anniversary. Top 20 volunteers list in 2013 had no 15/10/5? billionaires and now there a club of them. Much fewer billionaire hosts back then compared to now. Partly due (2010) Fermi Ampere (2020) 10 years of GPU advancement.
