I have an 8800GT. I read that there was a lot of people who did a Bios Mod of 8800GT to 9800GT. I also read that the GTS 240 was an 9800GT OC. Which made me think... I could bios mod to a 9800GT 65nm, but if someone had a 9800GT 55nm like the GTS 240, can fun things be done to it? Compute Capability 1.1 to 1.2 or will the thing just brick or die?

Use a wrong BIOS and it will probably be *very challenging* to make it work again. And compute capability 1.2 is not a software issue, it goes along with fundamental hadware changes.

Also don't confuse the GTS 240 with the GT 240. They are totally unrelated. The former is merely a rename of an older card (9800GT) in the typical NVidia fashion. The latter uses the new 40nm chip and is compute capability 1.2.

If you are having issues with a card and it is out of warranty you could try to update the firmware, but only use firmware from the card manufacturer, and only the firmware for your exact card. If there is no issue with your card then DO NOT Update the Firmware - it is unnecessarily risky and the damage that could happen is usually irreparable.

There is a lot of bad advice floating about the Internet as well as the good advice.
