I have registered and used the windows 7 expansion many times, but is there a point where I dont need to install xp for it to work? I say this because I will be buying either a gpu or a os next check and need to know. ps I still have to xp key just not the cd. I also plan on buying a amd card for folding@home but was on here for many years and like your help alot more. maybe some card recommendations?

Do you mean Windows 7 upgrade?

but is there a point where I dont need to install xp for it to work?
If it's a Windows 7 upgrade, then you'll need every time the base product installation media & product key to install the upgrade version.

I say this because I will be buying either a gpu or a os next check and need to know. ps I still have to xp key just not the cd.
That's bad news...

Always buy the latest & greatest. Folding@home can be run in NVidia cards too.

The easiest answer would be to do a full backup that can restore the pc to it's current state as at that point no you would never need the XP, or any other, disk ever again. There are several on the market that can do that, Macrium Reflect is a free one, for personal home use, while Acronis is not free but can do it too. If you know the brand of hard drive you have then Acronis does make a free version that will work for you, they make one for each brand of hard drive, but it ONLY works on that particular brand. Meaning people with multiple hard drives may have to install multiple copies of the free software, the pay one does not have any restrictions like that. I use the Reflect one and make an 'image' of my system once a month, that way I am never more than one month behind if everything crashes. Yes you can restore the system to a different size hard drive with either brand of software mentioned.

As for the card type a 7970 is better than one of the new R9 series cards, if the memory is the same size, but they are getting harder to find these days as they are no longer being made. But an older 5870 still works just fine too. It may help if you go on to Folding@home and look at what the top crunchers are using, then do a Google search, or even look on NewEgg.com, for the price points. Scroll down the list until you find your price point and you will have an idea of what a similar one will do in your machine. Lots of people tweak their machines and gpu's to have maximum output, if you don't but buy the exact same card your numbers still won't equal theirs, so use the list as a guideline only.

well i have learned from my experience oem is sold that way for a reason, most computers are oners and doners. anyways, ill sort it out, I like nvidia for its carbon inprint its just so freakn expensive, and for games I like amd more for its inexspensiveness to high output. anyways, I hate folding at home. If it wasnt for parkinsons, i think i have. clonidine did me well before i had side effects. anyways happy folding, my main goal is world of warcraft, seems ive listened to every song while folding.

Actually not necessarily, I buy XP, and other OS "restore" cd's online, here's an example http://www.pacificgeek.com/showcategorymfr.asp?c=283&s=-1&m=552 and then use the cd key from the side of the box I am installing it on to make it valid. The "restore" cd's do NOT have a built in key, but if you are installing to an actual Dell pc then it will normally pick it up from the bios and install it all by itself. I do have to go to the specific manufacturer of the box, or network card, to get the network drivers, but after that Windows update can do the rest. Except for the crunching gpu drivers of course. I have both Dell and Gateway, I know OLD, cd's and find they work just fine on almost any pc, even home built ones.

As an aside since XP is no longer being supported by MS you don't even need to put in a cd key anymore, and it won't come up saying it's going to quit or whatever. It therefore works just fine in a crunching only environment, with some stand alone anti-virus and spyware software additions of course. Eventually it won't work anymore as everyone updates to the higher and higher .net stuff, but it works just fine for now.

Yea, I called windows to get another xp cd in like 13' and they said that they dont make them anymore. I did this because I thought that maybe a cd would be cheaper than a license, as I already had a license key. So you mean now that since xp isnt supported a 7 upgrade would work fine without installing xp right? I mean that sounds correct on many levels if it wasnt for memory hungry vista over there. Is it true tho? I guess theres only one way to find out, but currently I have two oem keys, might just see if it works in a couple of days if I get a chance to get some ram and get my 4460 doing rosetta.
