Hello;

I have 3 GPUs working for GPUGRID.
Unfortunately, they are not powerful enough for 'Long Run work units'.
They are a Geforce GT710, GT730 and GT1030, all with GDDR5 memory.

Since last week, I am not getting any work units anymore.
And the GPUGRID server status says that there are no short run work units available.
So: Help!
Can you please generate new 'Short Run work units'?
I am very willing to help, but I cannot accept Long Run work units: My video cards are too slow for them.

Thank you in advance;
Carl Philip

As long there are viable computations to be done the project administrators aim to keep your GPUs busy. However, there is also much work to be done with tasks like analyzing results, developing new methods, conferences, grant processes, etc. For reasons such as those the project does not offer continuous work 24/7/365.

If your aim is to keep your systems busy and contributing to scientific endeavors then I would suggest adding a backup BOINC project. You can either manually check back with the server status (http://www.gpugrid.net/server_status.php) page to determine the availability of WUs or simply monitor your BOINC clients and suspend other projects when GPUGRID WUs return

If you do choose to set a "Backup" GPU project to GPUgrid as suggested by Matt, you can set the Backup project "Resource Share" setting to 0 (zero).

This setting will allow the backup project to download 1 task per GPU only when there are no jobs for your primary project (GPUgrid).

You can keep both the Primary and Backup projects active and this will automatically keep your GPU(s) active at all times.

Ah, okay thank you both for the information!
I did not know that the people who manage the GPUGRID servers also need to go to conferences etcetera.
I understand now that there may be no work units available from time to time.
I will see if I can find a backup project for which my GPUs are powerful enough.

Thank you again for the input!
I will wait patiently. :-)

Yours sincerely;
Carl

By the way, if anyone has an idea for a 'backup' GPU project, please let me know.
I prefer to stay in the world of healthcare, but there are almost no other GPU projects for that I think:
There is Folding@home, but this does not use the BOINC client, and the poblem is that their work units are GIGANTIC. My video cards are too slow for that project.
I have a few projects of World Community Grid running on my CPUs (mike Mapping Cancer Markers, Microbiome etc.), but WCG does not support GPUs.

Have a nice day;
Carl

There are no other healthcare GPU project in BOINC. FAH is the only other GPU based Healthcare Distributed Computing project (but not compatible with BOINC).
I use Einstein for a backup as their tasks are relatively small. Your cards should complete them around 2 - 3 hours.
There are plenty of other GPU based projects, just depends on what sparks your interest (after Healthcare)

Ok, many thanks for the info!
I'll try Einstein: As my GPUs are not very powerful, I need to keep an eye on the size of the work units.
Thanks for letting me know that the ones of Einstein are rather small.

Have a nice day!
Carl
