Can I still upload already running WUs or should I abort these?

Is there any possibility to push news like this into the BOINC client? It works at World Community Grid and Rosetta and possibly at many other projects (I just crunch WCG and Rosetta), so why not here

I don't want to be rude, but it's a bit annoying going on a quest of finding out why my GPU is sleeping, especially since it is quite frequent in the last months.

I understand that there are updates and other maintainence tasks at the server, but an instant notification would be helpful, maybe also when the project is online again.

Please check if it appeared now. Somebody complained that notices appeared too many times.

Yup, it's visible. How many more times people see it depends on the reminder interval set on their own computer - not under project control.

I'm considering disabling GPUGRID due to it's lack of work. Other gpu projects seem more stable. Could you be more forthcoming about the project's issues so we have some idea whether to stick around or not?

Thanks,
Steve

set a backup project with resource share of 0. it will run whenever GPUGRID is down and keep your GPUs from being idle.

this project also routinely runs out of work. just the way it is.

this project is always intermittent with work, even when there aren't any software or hardware problems. work will be intermittent, get used to it. work may last for weeks or months, then have no work again for months. it's just the way it is.

best to set a backup project so that your system fails over automatically when GPUGRID runs out of work.

Yes, now I have a message that the project is suspended, as soon as I updated the project after I read the forum reply.

In case there has been a misunderstanding: I am talking about the notices tab on the top, where you can choose which window is shown (notices, projects, tasks, transfers, statistics and disk), not about the event log after expanding the "tools" menu.
In the event log, I indeed get a message that the project is temporarily shut down for maintainence every time the projects updates.

I don't remember changing any settings related to the notices, and I even can't find any related settings neither in BOINC nor at the GPUGRID website...

Thanks for replying and acting, this is called a good service! :)

You probably didn't change anything - the default value is the one which is too aggressive for some people's taste.

The one I was referring to can be accessed by expanding the 'Options' menu (above your tab list), and selecting 'Other options ...'. 'Notice reminder interval' is the one which triggers repeated appearances of each notice in the 'notification area' - that's the bottom-right of the screen, near the clock. IIRC, the default is 6 hours, but mine is set to 'never' :-)

Thanks, you answered my question. There are other more stable gpu projects that don't need backups, I'll switch to them as it seems there's plenty of help on this one.

Steve

I take it you've never written and compiled a program, debugged it and finally beta tested it for several days to be sure it is ready to deploy.

true. and apparently the app here needs special approval and licensing from a larger group that owns the source code. probably some red tape to get through on that.

certainly not as easy as changing one input and hitting "GO".

I'm not sure what the red tape would be. Gianni is a principal of Acellera. He is supposedly the lead scientist here at GPUGrid.

question to the GPUGRID team: any rough idea when all will be back to normal - within the next 1-2 days, after about a week, ... ?

That should be done offline on another system.
You take an entire project down to write and compile a program?
I suppose if you have no other way to do it then yeah.

When I was in University I hung out with programmers working in Pascal. I saw how long it takes. They wrote the program on a pc and then then uploaded it.

The project is down because the old program failed, rather than because of a planned upgrade to a new program.

Not properly tested before deployment? Does the issue explain all the computation errors on the work units?

I don't get how a "program" can "fail" unless changes were made to the data being used by the project that caused it to "fail".

We (the general public) don't yet know exactly why it failed - only the project staff have access to the internal technical data.

But our working assumption is that it was designed to fail after one year of flawless service, due to a legal (licencing) constraint. Not a 'technical' failure that would be revealed by beta testing.

@Everyone eager for BOINC GPU workunits while this is being worked out: From what my machine has been running, I can recommend collatz, Einstein@Home, Moo Wrapper, PrimeGrid and Asteroids@Home. Between GPU Grid and those my Nvidia GPU always gets enough WUs. Collatz and Einstein even send WUs for my integrated Intel GPU.

Man, I don't understand the outrage. If you are annoyed so much, then just start to crunch another project. Y'all acting like you are paying money for a service that is temporarily unavailable for a week. You don't pay money to be able to crunch for GPUGRID, instead you are even receiving credits (GRC) for doing that.

If you are worried that you will lose so much GRC while the machine stands still, just crunch another project in the meantime.

There is a check that the app does not become too old. Building may not be a big hindrance, but doing the contrieved boinc deployment steps is. Project restarted.
